What's in store for the popular MySQL database application? At the 2006 MySQL Users Conference, leading developers at MySQL AB discuss the latest release, ideas for the future and licensing issues the open source community faces. Listen to Kaj Arnö, David Axmark and Michael Widenius as they talk about catching up on feature requests and working on even faster storage engines.

MySQL developers are working on the next generation storage engine for the next generation database application, called Falcon. Following release 5.0 - which contains more new features than any release before it - the development team is working on fixing the various gotchas of using MySQL. Now, more than ever, making a more efficient and web application friendly database is crucial.

Widenius and Axmark discuss their ideas for the future, including more of a focus on digital lifestyle applications - such as compiling our photo collections using the power of MySQL. Additionally, how is MySQL AB working together with its community of contributing developers, and how will it remain a profitable business? In a discussion between MySQL's leaders and developers, what was MySQL's past and how are they shaping its future?

Kaj Arnö is VP Community at MySQL AB, in charge of community relations and of the SAP partnership. Since joining MySQL AB as VP of training in 2001, Arnö has served in various VP positions, including professional services and software engineering. Arnö has recently moved from Munich, Germany back to Finland.

David Axmark is one of the founders of MySQL AB and has been working with MySQL since before it had a name. His involvement with MySQL began with the idea to make an open source SQL RDBMS to replace an old terminal based tool named UNIREG. Axmark worked as software consultant and wrote many lines of 6502 and Z80 assembler, C, Lisp, (Bourne)-Shell, and Perl. Axmark lives in Uppsala, Sweden, with his family, plants, and computers.

Michael "Monty" Widenius is the lead developer for the popular MySQL RDBMS project and is CTO of MySQL AB, a company that he co-founded to provide licensing, support, and other services for the MySQL RDBMS. Widenius worked on interesting projects like games coded in assembler, software for a single-card computer used by power companies, a multitasking OS for an 8-bit Z80-based computer, and a lot of data warehousing. Widenius lives in Helsinki, Finland, and in his spare time acts as shepherd for a large flock of humming boxes and flickering lights.
