"Citizen Gain": The New, New Journalism and Governance
26 minutes, 12.2mb, recorded 2009-09-09
Steven Berlin Johnson, Hal Roberts, Monica Guzman

Join best-selling author Steven Berlin Johnson as he discusses the changing face of online journalism, one in which citizen journalists and bloggers are news gatherers and information curators. From the bottom up to the top down, print journalism is giving way to online content providers and distributors, who are forced to wear many hats.

Jonhson talks with Monica Guzman, a local journalist for SeattlePI.com, who discusses the emergence of hyper local journalists and their increasing recognition as professional journalists. As bloggers become increasingly influential, some are finding a new level of professional opportunity and attaining press credentials in the void left by the collapse of traditional local papers. These new journalists, while paid less, carry with them powerful tools to access public information and share it with a wider audience than ever before.

Hal Roberts, a researcher at the Berkman Center for Internet & Society, also joins the conversation. Roberts discusses the new technologies his group has developed for analyzing media influencers, and what they choose to focus their attention on discussing. Bridging the gap between recognizable traditional media and the less professional bloggers of various political stripes, provides powerful insights on what people are talking about and how they discuss these issues.
