Artur Bergman, now CEO of Fastly, tells everyone what he really thinks about ops software offerings and their marketing. Given the state of things, it's important for any ops manager to be a generalist, and be ready to delve into understanding the nuances of distributed systems to fix underlying problems that cause delays and loss of traffic. Months after this talk, Bergman made tools available on GitHub, showing just what he meant.
Presenting a site traffic case, Bergman shows some typical, and typically maddening issues. He takes open-source development tool providers to task for hiding bad code and lying about how things work or don't work, as the case may be. He points out that the onus of repair is on the site manager, and how it's critical to understand underlying issues to truly fix traffic issues. Warning: Strong Language.
Artur Bergman, is currently founder and CEO of Fastly. A hacker and technologist at-large, he was VP of Engineering and Operations at Wikia. He provides the technical backbone necessary for Wikia’s mission to compile and index the world’s knowledge. He is also an enthusiastic apologist for federated identity and a board member of the OpenID Foundation.
In past lives, he’s built high volume financial trading systems, re-implemented Perl 5’s threading system, wrote djabberd, managed LiveJournal’s engineering team, and served as operations architect at Six Apart. His current interests extend to encompass semantic search, large scale infrastructure, open source development, federated instant messaging, neurotransmitters, and the future of cyborgs.
