With competition from on-line carriers such as Skype and the mobilization of everything, the telecom industry has weathered massive disruptions in the last ten years. It's jarring for businesses that have lived from one five-year plan to the next. Certainly there is more disruption ahead for the industry. Jan Dawson sketches a ten-year picture for the telecom industry. This talk outlines the trends, the players, and the consumers.

In 2020, we can expect offerings in the telecom categories of S.M.A.R.T. and L.E.A.N.:

S.M.A.R.T.: Services, Management, Applications, Relationships, and Technology: Dawson says there will be a shift toward content, with packaging based on the "digital citizen's" expectations of service. We see Apple, Google, and Amazon Prime morphing toward "all-in-one" relationships with users, and this will continue, as this meets up to 2/3 of users' needs.

L.E.A.N.: Low-Cost Enablers of Agnostic Networks: Still want the a-la-carte telco service for either highly specialized or very limited use? That will still be available for the "digital adventurers," including the consumer electronics vendors, software vendors, operators, jail-breakers, and hackers; as well as the "digital hermetics" needing only basic connectivity.
