While social media evolves rapidly, it is still a far cry from a utopian network. The ills in the present social media are its lack of integration with real-time communication systems, overload of the social graph, breach of data privacy, lack of ownership of data, and monopolized governance.
Alan alludes to Dunbar's Number, a prescription of the number of units a society must have in order to function effectively. Robin Dunbar, one of the most influential and best-known anthropologist of today's times says that out of a total sample set of all the people you know, you can at best have effective communication with only about a 100 to 230 people. This number applies to many societies, tribes and collections, says Alan.
For example, you have many people on your buddy list on social networks that you do not have an active communication with. All the rest is an overload on your social graph.
Also, today's social networks allow third-party applications to access your private data and serve targetted ads. This makes them less than safe.
Finally, while the content is created and driven by the masses, the ownership and gains are enjoyed only by the proprietors of the network. The social network of the future will be a peer-to-peer network with ownership of data distributed and its benefits reaped and shared by its contributors.
Also, today's real-time communication systems aren't tightly integrated with social networks either. Alan's endeavour through Telio is to connect these two.
Alan Duric is co-founder and CTO at Telio ASA, the leading European access independent Broadband Telephony/Multi-Modal service provider. Mr. Duric is also Co-founder of Sonorit/Camino netoworks and was Director of its Board of Directors from its inception (June 2005) until it was acquired by eBay/Skype (April 2006). Currently serves as Director of Sipfoundry.org BoD and is an Advisor at CounterPath´s, Xconnect´s and Kayote´s Board.
