Jonathan Miller

Chairman & CEO, AOL

The Future of AOL - A Conversation
31 minutes, 14.4mb, recorded 2005-10-06
Jonathan Miller

At the 2005 Web 2.0 conference, AOL's Chairman and CEO, Jonathan F. Miller, discusses with John Batelle the various challenges AOL is facing in the rapidly evolving Web 2.0 world.

AOL, the online service provider based in Dulles, Virginia and formerly known as America Online, Inc, at one point had 32 million subscribers in the United States and across the world. As AOL's subscriber numbers have continued to drop in the last few years, the company has had to strengthen and emphasise its online services, adapting to the rapid changes brought on by the Web 2.0 mindset.

Miller, who joined AOL in 2002, discusses his views and the progress at AOL in making the company compatible and competitive with the rest of the industry. For example, a large amount of time has been spent levelling the playing field between user generated and traditional content, and in making AOL a place where both can co-exist.

Miller has also attempted to tackle the question of AOL's openness and its image of a walled garden. While Miller feels that the change in mentality at AOL has been completed, a lot still needs to be done in order to embrace the world wide web on a world wide basis. AOL may be criticized for neglecting its ISP business in favor of competing services such as those of other major web brands such as Google, Microsoft, and Yahoo, but it is clear that AOL is determined to be as expansive as possible in order not to limit its powerful brand.
