"The future is here, it's just not evenly distributed yet." This quote is most often attributed to science fiction author, William Gibson. But Tim O'Reilly, CEO of O'Reilly Media, has turned it into a mantra for all of geek culture; a mantra that certainly applies to the technologies dicussed in this presentation.

In his keynote to the European Open Source Convention, held October 18-21, 2005, in Brussels, Belgium, Tim gives us a glimpse of what is on "The O'Reilly Radar"; an informal state-of-the-industry address for the open-source movement. The Radar is essentially the insight that O'Reilly Media gains from the analysis of its book sales, conferences, and community forums, and has grown in popularity in recent years.

Some of the blips on the Radar screen include Ruby on Rails, mashups, Greasemonkey, internet telephony, and rich media. Tim also mentions which programming languages are on the rise and which are fading in popularity. And, in an effort to find new data sources for the Radar, Tim outlines a research project, that O'Reilly is conducting in cooperation with Yahoo, to build a futures market for technology trends.

Tim O'Reilly is founder and CEO of O'Reilly Media, Inc., thought by many to be the best computer book publisher in the world. In addition to publishing pioneering books, O'Reilly has also been a pioneer in the popularization of the Internet. His Global Network Navigator (GNN) website, which was sold to America Online in September 1995, was the first Web portal and the first true commercial site on the World Wide Web. He received the InfoWorld Industry Achievement Award in 1998 for his advocacy on behalf of the open source community.

O'Reilly continues to pioneer new content developments on the web via its O'Reilly Network affiliate, which also manages sites such as Perl.com, XML.com, and OnDotNet.com. O'Reilly's conference arm runs several popular technology conferences including the O'Reilly Open Source Convention, the O'Reilly Emerging Technology Conference, as well as co-presenting the Web 2.0 Conference.
