Alfresco is the leading open source alternative for enterprise content management. The company's CTO, John Newton, joins Phil, Scott, and Ben to discuss how Alfresco uses an open source strategy to assist organizations to manage the capture, storage, security, revision control, retrieval, distribution, preservation and destruction of documents and content.
John first reviews his background and how his work at Documentum became the foundation of his current work. Web content consists of only about 25 percent of content, so it is important for an organization to develop ways to protect their documents as well as ways to make it easy to find and control content.
In addition to reviewing the technical aspects, he talks about the practical uses of the system. He talks about Alfresco's open source approach and reviews their business model. He also assesses open source as a viable way for technology companies to succeed.
John Newton, CTO and Chairman of Alfresco, has had one of the longest and most influential careers in content management. In 1990, John co-founded, designed and led the development of Documentum®, the leader in content management recently acquired by EMC®. For the next ten years, he invented many of the concepts widely used in the industry today. In addition, he built Documentum's marketing and professional services organizations in Europe.
John has also been an Entrepreneur-in-Residence at Benchmark Capital. John was one of the founding engineers at Ingres® where he helped develop the world's first commercial relational database. John graduated with a BS in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California at Berkeley.
