Beginning in the 1980's, the platform of the technology industry has been shifting from proprietary, complex hardware and packaged applications to standardized hardware and on-demand software and solutions. The resulting open source infrastructure is beneficial to all who are willing to adopt it.

Open source disrupts inefficient models and generates wealth by responding to the needs of the new market. Mårten Mickos offers examples of companies whose services become increasingly valuable proportionate to their use. Systems designed for user participation tap the passion of amateurs rather than relying solely on the skill of professionals.

The current information society is the result of an architecture of participation. By increasing entrance opportunities, significantly more people are involved in the process. Partnerships, successful acquisitions, and true innovation result.

Mårten Mickos joined MySQL AB as CEO in 2001. Under his leadership, the company has grown from a start-up to the second-largest open source company and the fastest-growing database vendor in the world. Prior to MySQL, Mickos held multi-national CEO and senior executive positions in his native Finland. He holds a M.Sc. in technical physics from Helsinki University of Technology.
