More than 1000 used computers will gain new life at Installfest at LinuxWorld, where volunteers will install new Linux and open source software over four days. LinuxWorld takes place from August 4-7, 2008, in San Francisco. The refurbished computers are donated to needy schools. Andrew Fife explains how it works, what software is getting installed, and how you can help this effort, whether or not you have Linux expertise or are attending LinuxWorld. He also talks about the challenges facing use of Linux in schools, and how the Installfest for Schools initiative will continue after LinuxWorld.

Andrew Fife is a senior product marketing manager for Untangle, a provider of open-source-based anti-spam and anti-malware gateways. Fife is also active in the San Francisco Bay Area user group community. He volunteers at Bay Area Linux Users Group (BALUG), the Peninsula Linux Users' Group (PenLUG) and the Silicon Valley Linux Users Group (SVLUG). Fife has been working with startups since completing his Master's degree from the London School of Economics in 2002.
