Eucalyptus (Elastic Utility Computing Architecture for Linking Your Programs To Useful Systems) is an open-source software infrastructure for implementing "cloud computing" on clusters. Rich Wolski, the director of the project, joins Phil to discuss it. Rich talks about how Eucalyptus is compatible with Amazon's EC2 interface, as well as the difference between grid and cloud computing and the steps involved in installing and using it. Eucalyptus is implemented using commonly-available Linux tools and basic Web-service technologies, making it easy to install and maintain.
Rich Wolski is an Associate Professor in the Computer Science Department of the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB). He received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of California at Davis (while he held a full-time research position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory). He has also held positions at the University of California, San Diego, and the University of Tennessee. He is currently also a strategic advisor to the San Diego Supercomputer Center and an adjunct faculty member at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.
