Senior Director, McKinsey & Company

An online giving marketplace that simply serves as a neutral, pass-through payment mechanism for donors is not sufficient for soliciting philanthropic funds. William Meehan, McKinsey senior director, says such online spaces need to be ramped up to serve as value-added components of any nonprofit organization. In this audio lecture recorded at Online Giving Marketplaces, a conference convened by the Stanford Social Innovation Review, McKinsey's William Meehan draws from 35 years of experience as a consultant and social entrepreneur to talk about where online giving marketplaces are currently, and where they need to go. Offering anecdotes and exemplars, he elucidates the opportunities and challenges in constructing effective online spaces, and outlines what will make this new philanthropy space successful in the future.

William F. Meehan III is a senior director of McKinsey & Company, where his focus is counseling chief executives and other senior leaders in technology and private equity. He retired from McKinsey at the end of 2008 to begin teaching full time at the Stanford Graduate School of Business. Meehan has been chair of the McKinsey Investment Office, which oversees more than $5 billion of investments, and chair of its West Coast practice. He is also a regular writer and speaker on the nonprofit and philanthropic sectors. Meehan is a member of the board of advisors of Stanford Social Innovation Review, and a member and former chair of Philanthropic Research Inc., which, through Guidestar.org, is the preeminent information source on the nonprofit sector.
