Crash-proof enterprise solutions are not beyond the capabilities of open-source database software, Baron Schwartz explains. He outlines Percona's enhancements to MySQL and InnoDB. They include XtraDB, a high-performance storage engine based on InnoDB, and Xtrabackup, a hot backup solution. Schwartz explains why each feature is needed to keep a high-performance site up and running at peak loads.
Integrated enterprise-ready database solutions require high-performance software to be scalable. The software Schwartz describes is all GPL-licensed and free. Baron Schwartz details how Percona works within the community of open-source developers to seek high-leverage spots in the code and tweak the performance. The new applications support streaming and throttling to help sites avoid spikes, pile-ups, and freeze-ups during peak operations. Future plans include ideas for making i/o much more effective.
Baron Schwartz is Chief Performance Architect of Percona and lead author of O'Reilly's High Performance MySQL. He has created and led open source projects, including a suite of tools for MySQL users, clients such as Amazon.com and Google. Founder of the O'Reilly OpenSQL Camp conference, Baron Schwartz is an acknowledged leader in high-performance enterprise scale systems built on LAMP. Schwartz, a graduate of the University of Virginia, lives in Virginia with this family.
