Too many kids are missing out on one of the most important childhood experiences: play. Globeshakers host Tim Zak conducts an audio interview with Darrell Hammond, who envisions every child in America having a great place to play within walking distance of his or her home. Hammond is founder of KaBOOM!, an innovative community model that brings together business and community interests to construct more than 850 new playgrounds and skateparks, and renovate 1,300 others nationwide. He talks about why play matters for the health of our children, and even what it means for the future of the American workforce.

Darrell Hammond founded KaBOOM! in 1995. In 2001, the organization received the Chairman's Commendation from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission for its achievements in playground safety, and, in 2000, the Peter F. Drucker Foundation honored the organization's annual training conference, the KaBOOM! Playground Institute, with a special innovation award. In 1999, Hammond was one of five national winners of the "Making a Difference Award" by Diet Coke and was profiled in People magazine. In 2000, Crain's Chicago Business named Hammond one of their "40 under 40" for his innovative leadership.
