Coffee is the second most widely traded commodity in the world. With plunging trade prices, this $55 billion industry experiences major sustainability issues on the economic, social and environmental levels. This panel discussion from Bridging the Gap, the Stanford 2005 Net Impact Conference hosted by the Stanford Graduate School of Business describes the mechanics of the coffee crisis and explores strategies to address global challenges. What are the benefits of Fairtrade and Organic certifications? Should consumers pay premium prices? What are the opportunities and challenges facing coffee retailers in managing their supply chain to ensure their sustainability? What are the economic tradeoffs involved in pursuing sustainable practices?

Panelists include:

  • Tracy Ging, Director of Marketing and Communication, Coffee Quality Institute
  • Dennis Macray, Manager Corporate Social Responsibility, Starbucks Coffee Company
  • Steve Sellers, Chief Operating Officer, Transfair
